A comic book series that is spending more time trying to pay the lore of the Blade Runner franchise decent kudos whilst injecting a swath of new replicant-centric stories into the mix - rather than adequate character development and story.
Set 20 years after the events of the Ridley Scott film and 10 years before the sequel, Blade Runner 2039 feels like it’s trying to do for the Blade Runner franchise what The Animatrix achieved for the Matrix.
Just like The Animatrix, we’re getting a world fleshed out and expanded upon. But while The Animatrix achieved this mission and overcame the creativity held with what the writers tried to do in Matrix Reloaded and -UGH- Matrix Revolutions, there’s this overwhelming feeling that certain necessary ingredients are missing in the Blade Runner 2039 mix.
