What Is Fck’n Nuts?
Fck’n Nuts tells the simple and relatable story of a young girl named Sandy (Maddie Nichols) who was dating a sweet boy named Dan (Vincent Stalba) but sadly realises that she has to break it off with him. See Sandy has a slightly unusual pair of parents that tend to scare off any boy she brings home and she doesn’t want to have to go through that again so she tries to break it off with Dan, but Dan is determined to prove that he can handle anything for Sandy…he will probably be proven wrong about that but you’ll have to spare the time to see this short to find out if he can for yourself.
Fck’n Nuts Review
Fck’n Nuts is a glorious technicolor nightmare that you can’t help but cackle at. Its clever blend of comedy and horror feels like a throwback to segments from Tales from the Crypt, with a very simple setup and twisted visuals that lend to a lot of the humour and horror that works so well here. Every single section of the film is lit with an impossibly bright shade of whatever random colour the lighting tech could find and it works, creating a strange surreal tone that helps you buy into the weirdness before Fck’n Nuts pulls out its ultimate punchline.
For a simple short film telling a quick little story, there are so many fascinating stylistic choices that make Fck’n Nuts a rich experience. It alternates carefully between wild comedic moments and some genuine horror, the final tableau being a blend of both that’s just so insane that it’s impossible to describe even if I wanted to be the kind of asshole to spoil the punchline of a short film’s joke.
Fck’n Nuts is absurd but it works, there’s a strange logic to the film that allows you to buy into the weirdness so that when it finally reveals what it’s aiming towards you can just nod and go “Yep, that tracks” and then laugh as they take their very silly joke to the logical extreme.
What’s truly great about Fck’n Nuts is that it feels like the kind of story that could only work in this form, it doesn’t feel like a pitch for a feature film or like it’s part of some other grand franchise. It’s a wholly original story that sets up its own strange world within a matter of seconds, takes advantage of the fact that its big reveal is so gloriously stupid that it could only work once, and then dips out. It’s calibrated perfectly to not outlast its welcome but makes the most of what it has the time to do. It shifts through about 3 different genres in 7 minutes and all of them are handled perfectly, it’s truly a special sight to see.
Why You Should Watch
There are times when you will see a short film and have the reaction of “I would kill to see what this director would do with a feature film budget”... so, who do I have to kill to make that happen? Because Fck’n Nuts is so unique and fascinating that it will not only have you bent over in laughter at the audacity of the filmmakers to take this material where they take it, but it certainly has this reviewer’s eyes on director/writer Sam Fox to see when someone will let her weirdness shine for the fun of a feature-length film. If this is the strange magic she can pull off within 7 minutes, I will go absolutely fucking nuts over whatever the heck she throws out next.
